Cityscapes

Boats at the Dock, Back Bay, Biloxi. 1939, pastel on paper, 10 1/2 x 13 1/2. Private Collection.

A select sampling of the many cityscapes Dusti Bongé created during her early years.

Some of Dusti Bongé’s better known and most beloved early works are the cityscapes of her hometown, Biloxi. They are exemplary versions of her unique cubist style. In addition, they offer a glimpse into history, to a bygone era when the presence of the seafood industry in Biloxi was a much more dominant aspect of the cityscape.

Many of her cityscapes show scenes of the harbor with fishing or shrimp boats, masts, piers, factories, and canneries. Others show the "Fishing Camps", i.e., the neighborhoods where may of the shrimp pickers and oyster tongers lived in small vernacular, cottage style cabins.

Finally, there are some unque elements of the local architecture such as gazebos, awnings, the lighthouse, and the very southern, so-called "shoofly."
